@Gamers Nexus HI I want to know why has Nvidia capped this cards power! Shunt mod video please. I think the chip and vrm can handle it. I would have bought this product if not for Nvidia not allowing us to get more performance from what we buy. I bought it let me do what i want with the damn thing!

yes and no. It's just an optimized process from what they were using and not a major node at all. It's just made bigger which results in the performance delta... and price.

I am not sure i'd call it pointless---my ASUS 2080 Ti Turbo (shitty blower card) was hitting around 83-85 in games, with RIDICULOUS fan noise..after I installed a Kraken G12 with Kraken x42, temps do not surpass 45C....very happy with it!

Seems to me that putting a complete watercooling solution in place for the 2080 ti is valid as a preparatory move prior to lifting the power restrictions.... especially if the goal is a quiet, power unlimited end game.

Great article/video. I was thinking of picking this up. Currently have a 980ti Classified. If I am not overclocking this thing, is it worth the purchase? Or should I wait for a reworked version? I dont have a 4k monitor or anything so I doubt I'd be pushing this thing. Just wanna crank up some settings on some older titles. Btw thank you again for posting this.

I would imagine the power limitation and trend towards lower over clocks has to do with a couple things. #1 bottom lines. Make them buy a new card every generation. #2 RTX on using more of the GPU may present extremely high / terrible thermals and the limit is to protect the card in combination with the better PCB. Any serious overclock may simply destroy the card with stock coolers when RTX is enabled and or may simply become unstable due to the complexity of processing RTX. To test this we need an RTX enabled game which we don't even currently have. Our limitations nay be dependent on a feature we cant use ATM and further may never to rarely use. #3 Every time we increase chip complexity we tend to hit separately thermal and cooling limitations as well as STABILITY limitations. We can see this in history with ARM processors. The single cores could over clock from 600mhz to 1.8ghz with a good kernel. The dual core generation could OC 100-200mhz at best from 800mhz to maybe 1ghz if lucky... The additional technology added to the RTX line of GPU's may simply make them unstable past certain frequencies weather they are meeting thermal and power limitations or not. Perhaps this is why Nvidia down clocks Quadros and strips down the faster GTX and RTX variants. And of course bottom line. We know Nvidia is neutering boards and drivers. We have also seen them slightly uneuter them over time in part due to customer outrage but also possibly in part due to better driver and firmware optomization and additional testing over time. It could be that better over clocks could become available in a few months due to loss of profit margine and more testing and optimization. Sorry for the long post lol. Thanks for reading.

These Turing gpu's were meant to be smaller than 12nm. Nvidia pushed them out early to seize the opportunity. Look at that large die size. That is the reason for the dual 8 pin, different power handling setup and dual fans. Nvidia put a limit for a reason. These are merely "break the ice" gpu's.

I have strong suspicion that this power bottleneck is intended. Expect Titan card on Turing with very similar or same PCB. That room for extra output is not limited without intention, that would be my guess

Cant you flash the bios from a 3rd party card on the FE and get the power benefits from that if you have a FE card? I did this on my 1080 Ti, and it seems to work since Im not hitting power limit anymore at 1980 Mhz or thermal limits with a NH-D15S hooked on it. Also got full control over the fans (Not sure if this is a issue on the 20-series like on the 1080 Ti FE).

That power limit sucks, like an idiot I got a reference blower 1070 and whacked an Arctic 140mm Hybrid on it. temp @ idle = 30c temp @ max load = 48c. I'm power limited all the way. Should have got a non ref 1070 with higher power budget. If I swap out the 1070 for a non reference 1080ti it'll smash a 2080 for non render based games = all of them at the moment. Limiting power is just a means of product segregation that Nvidia uses, they've turned up the dial this generation. My 1070 without a power cap would have blown the doors off of a standard 1080...

Isn't the power limit a function of the PCI-E specification? According to Wikipedia, in order to comply with the PCI-Express spec, total consumption of the card may be limited to a total of 300 watts, even if individually, the supplementary power cables can each supply up to 150 watts. So, while the total of 150 watts for each cable, plus 75 watts from the slot adds up to 375, the max the spec allows is 300, apparently. In other words, blame the PCI-Express consortium for the limit, not nvidia. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#Power

Der8auer tried the shunt mod, but he missed your calli of the the other 8-pin resistor being on the back. Still, he did get some more headroom out of it, and it appeared to be an extreme drop off of diminishing returns past the default power envelope. Like ~10% for another 50 watts if I remember right.

I really don't care about power or speed, I buy GPU for the name and to know it's the best. I can show my friends and make them jealous. Also, RGB are very important. Specifically the "breathe" feature. Makes the computer look extra ominous when my friends look at it. It makes no sense to spend all this time overclocking when NVidia has already given you the best card on the market. Stop complaining and just buy it or don't (because you're poor loser). My dad works for Nintendo so I have a lot of money.

Video suggestion: what kind of gaming-focused PC can one build (sans monitor/kybd/mouse) for *just* the cost of a 2080 Ti? In the UK the card costs 1100 UKP new. In the UK, a used 1080 Ti seems to go for about 450 to 550 UKP on ebay atm (though watch out, there are loads of fake listings for about 125 UKP), 550 to 600 BIN. From normal retail sources, 440 UKP is enough for a new 1080, 580 UKP for a new 1080 Ti, 450 for a new Vega 64. Btw, why do so many cards on seller sites not mention their base clocks? Even on the manufacturer pages it's often not mentioned (found this with Gigabyte and ASUS). For those that do mention it, the clock always seems to be the same 1350MHz, even for the most expensive model (MSI Seahawk Hybrid at 1280 UKP).

So wait. 2 8-pin power connectors plus the pcie slot equals about 375 watts total and the card runs about 280-300 watts under full load. Pcper said 250 watts. So is it using 75 to 150 watts in the overclock or is it reserving power for the rtx and tensor cores.

TBH thogh who needs to overclock the 2080 ti it's already 40% better than the 1080ti, unless your doing something absolutely batshit like running 2 8K monitors, that no one owns, there is no need for this much power. Maybe nVidia are kneecapping the power delivery, so that more people buy FE than 'overclocked' board partners, or maybe they are sick of the OC craze and want it to end.

Der8auer made a video on this just yesterday I believe. He goes as far as hardmodding the power + running dry-ice cooling. Go watch his video yourself, but basically the results show extremely poor scaling even when pushed to those extremes. The cards start eating up an impractically large amount of power while only achieving a handful of percentage points better performance - I think 20% more total performance was his max compared to 12% on air, so ovbiously this is not remotely practical. TLDR: These cards are already tuned close to optimal and don't have more usable extra headroom than you can achieve on a good board-partner cooler. It still sucks to now have more control over power, but at least you won't really be missing out on anything.
